How Parking Sensors Work: A Dive into the Technology:
Ultrasonic Sensors: The Most Common Type
Parking sensors usually rely on ultrasonic sensors. These sensors emit sound waves and measure the time taken for the waves to bounce back, which tells the sensor how far an obstacle is. They are popular due to their wide availability, low cost, and effective performance in many conditions. However, they may struggle in extreme weather like heavy rain or snow and can have blind
spots.
Electromagnetic Sensors: An Alternative Approach:
Electromagnetic sensors work by creating a magnetic field around the car’s bumper. They detect changes in this field when nearby objects interfere, alerting the driver to obstacles. One key advantage is that they can be hidden behind the bumper, maintaining a sleek look. They are also often less affected by weather conditions compared to ultrasonic sensors. However, in some cases, their detection range might be a bit less precise than that of ultrasonic sensors.

How to install
If you are still not confident about your reverse driving skills and feel uncomfortable when while backing up your vehicle, parking sensors for vehicles can offer a great deal of help. Installing reverse parking sensors yourself is not a difficult job. Firstly, select a location on the bumper for their placement. Use your measuring tape and mark the locations where you want the sensor to be located. Before you begin installing the sensor, plug them into the control box and connect the control box to one of your parking lights. You can use the car’s manual in case you need help while installation. Now test the connector to see if the connectors are working properly. Once you finish testing, disconnect and take the drill and begin drilling holes for the installation of the reverse parking sensor. The drill bit that comes along with this sensor kit helps you in convenient drilling. Finally, choose a suitable location for the control box. Most of the time, the box will be located in the trunk of the vehicle or the cargo space area. Make sure to install the control unit in a place that cannot be damaged by water. Use a double-sided tape to secure the unit and you are ready to use the smart vehicle parking sensor
Google reviews :
I did a test ‘drive’ into a stone lion in the blind spot and plant box, it beeped constant at 0.6mt. The hole saw should have smaller to match sensor insert I had put sealant on the inside, lucky I had the back ‘skirt’ off to fit a towbar
- Installation easy, depending on the vehicle, works well
- A great product especially for the money!
- Negative reviews
- Nothing if they fitted my car
Dolphin Automotive DPS450 Reverse Parking Sensors Kit – 4 Ultrasonic Sensors, Audio & Display Alerts, Available in Multiple Colors
Description
The Dolphin DPS450 is a parking sensor system designed to look like factory-installed equipment. It fits a wide range of cars and includes 4 sensors, along with a digital display and built-in buzzer. The buzzer emits beeps that get faster as you get closer to an obstacle, and the display shows a countdown in centimeters. You can turn the buzzer on or off with a switch.
The system activates when you put the car in reverse. If you’re within 1.5 meters of an obstacle, the buzzer starts with occasional beeps. As you get even closer, the beeps speed up. When you’re just 30cm from an obstacle, the beeps turn into a continuous tone, warning you to stop. The display also shows a left/right indicator to show which side of the car is closest to the object you’re reversing towards.
The sensors come with over 2 meters of cable, which should be enough for most vehicles. If needed, you can buy extension leads. The brainbox (the main unit) is installed in the back of the car, typically behind one of the rear light panels, so the cables don’t need to run all the way to the front. It gets its power from the reversing light. The display has a 6-meter cable, which is long enough to place it at the front of the car, and it can be attached to your dashboard with its adhesive backing. Extension leads for the display are also available if needed.
Pros:
- Easy to install yourself.
- Accurate distance readings, confirmed with a measuring tape.
- Helpful distance guide on the dashboard.
- Loud beeping alert when reversing.
- Excellent product quality.
- Accurate distance display (e.g., 0.3m showing as 32cm).
- LED display is appreciated for visibility.
- Product works well for a few weeks or more for some users.
Cons:
- Sensors may start failing after a couple of months (continuous beeping, no registration).
- Some users experienced poor customer service (no response to multiple emails).
- No fixing instructions were provided.
- Color mismatch (e.g., Ice blue) was noted but not a major issue.
- A display extension lead was needed but not supplied with the kit.
